Cave diving in Mexico is a technical activity reserved for divers with specific cave certification. The systems of the Yucatan Peninsula offer hundreds of kilometres of flooded passages that require planning, redundant equipment and overhead-environment procedures.

There are thousands of cenotes across the Yucatan Peninsula, and hundreds of them give access to the largest underwater river network on the planet — a true labyrinth of galleries that runs beneath the jungle and connects systems that look independent from the surface.

The hundreds of kilometers of cave currently mapped were formed over thousands of years by the slow erosion of limestone, carved by freshwater flowing underground to create passages, vaults, and chambers of surprising scale.

An otherworldly landscape

Once inside these caves, the landscape changes completely: stalactites, stalagmites and columns remain intact from ancient times, many of them formed when these caverns were still dry.

Visibility is typically exceptional, and phenomena like the halocline — where freshwater meets saltwater — create unique visual effects that turn each dive into an almost surreal experience.

Inside the cenotes, remains of animals from the last ice age have been found, along with human remains and artifacts proving that our ancestors lived in these caves before they flooded. This makes every dive not just an adventure but also a journey into the past.
