The Yucatán Peninsula hides one of the most important underwater cave systems in the world beneath its limestone ground. With more than 1,200 registered cenotes in the Riviera Maya and hundreds of kilometers of flooded passages, choosing where to dive can be difficult if you do not know the area well.

This guide introduces 6 very different cenotes so you can understand what kind of experience each one offers and choose the best option for your level, experience and expectations underwater.

1. Dos Ojos: the perfect classic to start with

• Maximum depth: 9 meters
• Required level: Open Water Diver or higher
• Visibility: more than 50 meters in good conditions
• Type: recreational cavern and technical cave system
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 45 minutes

Dos Ojos is probably one of the most famous cenotes in the Riviera Maya, together with Angelita and El Pit. Its name comes from its two main entrances, which from above look like two open eyes in the middle of the jungle.

It is one of the best-known cenotes for diving because it combines excellent visibility, comfortable depth and very attractive cavern routes for recreational divers.

The Dos Ojos system has two main circuits accessible to recreational divers: the Barbie Line and the Bat Cave. The first one is usually brighter and more visual. The second one has darker areas and allows you to visit a chamber where bats can sometimes be seen above the water.

Visibility can exceed 50 meters, creating a very different feeling from ocean diving. At times, it feels like floating inside a natural cathedral of rock, crystal-clear water and light.

It is an ideal cenote for divers who want their first cavern experience with controlled depth, good conditions and a highly rewarding visual route.

2. El Pit: depth, light and halocline

• Current maximum recreational depth: 21 meters, due to cenote conservation rules
• Required level: Advanced Diver or equivalent
• Visibility: very good in normal conditions
• Type: open cenote with cavern area and technical cave system
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 45 minutes

El Pit is one of the best-known cenotes in the Riviera Maya and one of those dives many divers have on their list before they even arrive in Mexico.

Although the system is much deeper from a technical diving perspective, the maximum recreational depth is currently limited to 21 meters. This measure helps protect the cenote and preserve its famous cloud by reducing pressure and movement in the area.

What makes El Pit special is the combination of depth, light and water layers. On sunny days, rays enter through the opening above and cross the water, creating impressive columns of light.

You can also observe the halocline, the area where the cenote’s fresh water meets salt water that arrives from the sea through underground passages. This difference in density creates a very distinctive visual effect, as if the water were bending or becoming blurry for a few seconds.

El Pit is not the recommended cenote for a first experience. It requires good buoyancy, controlled descent and comfort at depth. But for experienced Advanced divers, it is a very special dive.

3. Angelita: the hydrogen sulfide cloud

• Required level: Advanced Diver minimum
• Visibility: clear in the upper section, variable around the cloud
• Type: open cenote
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 60 minutes

Angelita is one of the most recognizable cenotes in the Riviera Maya. Its most famous image is the cloud that appears around 30 meters deep, creating a scene that seems to divide the cenote into two different worlds.

That cloud is not made of tannins. It is formed by hydrogen sulfide, produced by the decomposition of organic matter at the bottom of the cenote. The result is a dense, whitish layer that creates a very unique underwater scene.

Fallen trunks and branches remain suspended or partly covered by the cloud, creating a visual sensation unlike any reef dive or bright cavern dive.

Angelita requires good buoyancy control and comfort at depth. It is not a technical dive on the recreational route, but it does require experience, control and close attention to the briefing.

It is a perfect option for Advanced divers looking for something different, more atmospheric and visually unique.

4. Chac Mool: three cenotes in one

• Maximum depth: between 10 and 15 meters in the cavern area
• Required level: Open Water Diver or higher
• Visibility: more than 50 meters in good conditions
• Type: recreational cavern
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 45 minutes

Chac Mool is one of the most complete options for recreational divers because it allows you to enjoy three areas within the same system: Kukulkán, Little Brother and Chac Mool.

This makes it a very versatile experience. Depending on the chosen route, you can enjoy dives with natural light, wide cavern areas and decorated passages with rock formations.

Both dives have access to natural light. On the first dive, light is present almost throughout the route. On the second, it appears at different points, creating beautiful contrasts between illuminated areas and darker sections.

Visibility can exceed 50 meters, just like in Dos Ojos, allowing you to enjoy the formations and the feeling of space with great clarity.

Chac Mool is ideal for divers who want a complete cenote experience, with two different dives and plenty of visual variety without entering a technical environment.

5. Dream Gate: decorated cavern and darker atmosphere

• Average depth: 7 meters
• Required level: Advanced diver recommended
• Visibility: more than 50 meters in good conditions
• Type: cavern / cave system
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 50 minutes

Dream Gate is one of the most decorated cenotes in the area. Its formations, stalactites and rock structures make it a very attractive dive for divers looking for a darker, calmer and visually rich route.

Unlike more open or brighter cenotes, Dream Gate has little natural light beyond the main entrance. This makes the experience more immersive and makes buoyancy control especially important.

The average depth is around 7 meters, so it is not a deep cenote. Its difficulty is not depth, but the environment: more enclosed areas, limited natural light and many delicate formations that must never be touched.

It is a perfect dive for divers with good buoyancy, previous cenote experience or comfort in darker cavern environments.

Dream Gate is not the best cenote for someone looking for a very bright first experience. But for divers who have already explored other cenotes and want something more decorated and special, it can be one of the best choices.

6. Nohoch Nah Chich: wide, dark cavern with history

• Maximum depth: approximately 6 meters
• Required level: Advanced diver recommended
• Visibility: more than 50 meters in good conditions
• Type: wide and dark cavern
• Distance from Playa del Carmen: approximately 60 minutes

Nohoch is one of the best-known names in the world of Riviera Maya cave diving. Although it is part of a large cave system, it can also be approached as a cavern dive when done with the right guide and within recreational cavern limits.

It is a wide but dark cavern. This creates a very different experience from brighter cenotes such as Dos Ojos or Chac Mool. Here the feeling is calmer, more enveloping and focused on navigation, torch light and rock formations.

The maximum depth of the cavern route is around 6 meters, so it is not a deep dive. As with Dream Gate, the difficulty is not measured in meters, but in the type of environment.

During the cavern line route, you reach another cenote called Puerta del Cielo, which acts as a natural reference and helps maintain proper cavern-diving conditions.

Nohoch Nah Chich is a very interesting option for divers with good buoyancy, previous experience and the desire to experience a darker, wider cenote with a feeling closer to the world of cave diving.

How to choose the right cenote for your level

If it is your first time diving in cenotes, Dos Ojos or Chac Mool can be a very good choice. They offer excellent visibility, controlled depths and very attractive routes for recreational divers.

If you are Advanced certified and looking for a deeper or more unusual experience, El Pit and Angelita offer very special dives. El Pit stands out for its light, halocline and feeling of depth. Angelita stands out for its hydrogen sulfide cloud and unique atmosphere.

If you already have cenote experience and good buoyancy, Dream Gate can be a great option thanks to its formations and darker atmosphere.

If you want a wide, dark and shallow cavern, Nohoch offers a very interesting experience, especially for divers who want to get closer to the feeling of cave diving while staying within the recreational cavern-diving framework.

How to prepare for cenote diving from Playa del Carmen

Before diving in cenotes, it is important to keep a few points in mind:

• Valid certification: bring your diving certification. For recreational cenotes, Open Water Diver is usually the minimum requirement. For more advanced cenotes, Advanced certification or previous experience may be required.
• Good buoyancy: in cenotes, nothing should be touched. Formations take thousands of years to grow and are extremely delicate.
• Respect for the environment: cenotes are fragile ecosystems. Avoid sunscreens, creams or products that could contaminate the water.
• Proper wetsuit: water temperature is usually around 24-25°C all year round. A 5 mm wetsuit is recommended, especially if you are doing two dives.
• Listen to the briefing: each cenote has its own rules, route, entry points, light zones and limits. Following your guide’s instructions is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
• Book in advance: some cenotes have capacity limits, schedules or specific restrictions. Booking ahead helps organize the experience better.
