Riviera Maya Cenotes
Cenote Dos Ojos Playa del Carmen
Dos Ojos — named after its two eye-shaped entrances — is the most famous cenote in the Riviera Maya and one of the most extensively mapped cave systems in the world. Its two main circuits are completely different from each other, making it a perfect choice for a double-tank cavern dive.
Technical sheet
- Minimum level: Open Water Diver
- Depth: 3-9 meters
- Visibility: 50 meters
- Distance from Playa del Carmen: 45 minutes, inside Dos Ojos Park
- Type: cavern system — 2 main circuits
The underwater experience
The Barbie circuit — the brighter and most visited route — runs through wide galleries with plenty of natural light. Visibility often reaches 50 meters, and the stalactites and stalagmites decorating the route create an exceptional visual experience. It is accessible to any Open Water Diver with a certified guide.
The Bat Cave circuit is completely different. It enters a partially dark area where hundreds of bats rest on the ceiling of the gallery. Light only enters through specific points, creating a more intimate and mysterious atmosphere. It demands more control in buoyancy, but it remains accessible for recreational divers with an Open Water level.
The Dos Ojos system connects underground with Nohoch Nah Chich, forming part of the largest known network of flooded galleries. For technical divers, exploration can extend for kilometers underground. For recreational divers, the two main circuits offer more than two hours of high-quality cenote diving.
Why choose this cenote?
Dos Ojos is one of the most complete cenotes for divers entering a cavern system for the first time. The galleries are wide, well studied and free of current, with no strong sense of confinement and plenty of natural light.
The double circuit lets you experience two very different dives in the same day without changing location: first a brighter and more open dive, then a route with more contrast, darker areas and a very different atmosphere.
Mimi’s tip
Always book the double tank to see both circuits. Do Barbie first to get comfortable in the cenote environment, then Bat Cave once you feel more settled in the system. Together, they create one of the most complete cenote diving experiences in the Riviera Maya.
