Cenote Angelita diving from Playa del Carmen

Riviera Maya Cenotes

Cenote Angelita Playa del Carmen

Angelita is, without question, the most surreal cenote in the Riviera Maya. And that says a lot in a region full of unforgettable underwater sites. At 30 metres deep, a dense layer of hydrogen sulphide floats like coastal fog, with submerged trees and branches emerging from the white cloud to create an unreal, almost ghostly scene.

The underwater experience

Angelita’s hydrogen sulphide cloud forms through the decomposition of organic matter at the interface between the cenote’s fresh water and the salt water that reaches the system through underground passages. The result is a dense whitish cloud that seems to float between two worlds: the crystal-clear water above and the mystery below.

The trees and branches that became submerged when the cenote formed are partly hidden inside that cloud, with their tops emerging upwards as if they were growing out of the fog. The images you can capture in Angelita are truly unique: they look like science fiction or scenes from another planet.

Angelita, one of Mexico's most famous cenotes

Diving Angelita requires careful buoyancy control. As you pass through the famous cloud, visibility drops to zero for a few moments before recovering in the salt water below. The experience of rising back into clear water is one of the most powerful moments in cenote diving.

Why choose this cenote?

Angelita is unique in the world. There is no other place where divers with an Advanced Open Water level can experience this phenomenon so accessibly. It is the kind of dive that helps you understand why the Riviera Maya is considered one of the best diving destinations on the planet.
