Two ways to dive Cozumel from Playa del Carmen
Option A — Cozumel from Playa del Carmen by speedboat
Cozumel island sits 20 km off Playa del Carmen and is easily accessible via several daily ferries between both locations.
However, if you decide to dive with us and you're staying in Playa del Carmen, we make it easy: we depart directly from the Playa del Carmen coast, skipping the ferry hassle and heading straight to Cozumel's dive sites on our private dive boat.
(We don't actually land on the island — we go to the dive sites and return to Playa del Carmen.)

Option B — Cozumel from the island (Marina Fonatur)
This option is for you if you want to spend time on Cozumel island before or after diving.
Several passenger ferries run daily from Playa del Carmen. Some carry vehicles, but we personally don't recommend visiting Cozumel by car: it's awkward, expensive, and the schedule isn't always guaranteed. Once on the island you can easily rent a scooter or similar.
With this option, the meeting point is directly at Marina Fonatur Cozumel, where we have facilities to provide equipment if you need it, with three dive boats just a few meters away.
Typical Cozumel dives
Usually the first dive is a wall dive along the drop-off, and the second a shallower reef or the famous C-53 wreck.
Drift diving
Important: diving in Cozumel is always drift diving, since currents are present daily and can be quite strong. Sometimes they're not suitable for certain levels. The specific dive sites are chosen on the day according to the participants' levels and sea conditions.

What's the difference between diving Cozumel by speedboat or by ferry?
Cozumel is a small island located off the coast of Playa del Carmen, with ferries connecting both locations every hour in both directions.
If your goal is to explore the island in addition to diving, the ferry option is best: we give you all the instructions to cross from Playa del Carmen and meet you directly at the Cozumel dive center, returning around 1 pm. After that you can stay and explore the island and return to Playa whenever you like, or even spend the night in Cozumel if you plan to do consecutive reef diving days.
If you don't feel the urge to explore the island, the express speedboat option is easier. We depart directly from Playa del Carmen first thing in the morning, do two dives off Cozumel's coast with the proper surface interval, and return to Playa around midday.
In both cases the dive sites are the same, chosen on the day according to sea conditions — only the logistics change.
What's the difference between diving Playa del Carmen and Cozumel?
Cozumel is famous for its incredible coral, strong daily currents, and exceptional visibility that turns your view deep blue as soon as you jump in.
Playa del Carmen, on the other hand, has two reefs: a closer, shallower one (between 6 and 12 meters) ideal for first dive experiences, and a deeper one further out (over 18 meters) with beautiful dive sites where the coral isn't as spectacular as Cozumel's but hosts plenty of marine life.
Although the current tends to be stronger in Cozumel, Playa also has days with moderate-to-strong current. For this reason, all dives are drift dives, with the boat picking us up where the dive ends.
Can we do a night dive?
Absolutely. Night dives in the Caribbean Sea are varied and very different from day dives. We just need a minimum of 4 participants to organize the trip, and we can do night dives off Playa del Carmen and Cozumel.
