Swim with whale sharks from Playa del Carmen

From May to September, you can join a whale shark tour from Playa del Carmen to the sighting area off Isla Mujeres. The experience is done by snorkeling and includes transport, equipment and support from certified guides.

On the best days, several dozen whale sharks may be seen, allowing you to snorkel surrounded by the largest fish in the ocean.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean and can reach close to 12 meters in length. Despite their intimidating name and huge size, they are peaceful and harmless: they feed on plankton.

What is the activity like?

The experience is done by snorkeling, not scuba diving, and trips usually head toward the Isla Mujeres area. Encounters happen at the surface, making it accessible for people who can swim and feel comfortable in the water.

When is the best time to see whale sharks in the Riviera Maya?

Season runs from May to September, with peak sightings in July and August. On the best days, several dozen whale sharks can be spotted gathered off Isla Mujeres, making Mexico one of the most spectacular whale shark destinations in the world.

Is it dangerous to swim with whale sharks?

Not at all. The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) feeds exclusively on plankton and is completely harmless to people. Despite its size — they can exceed 12 metres — its behaviour in the water is calm and unhurried. It is one of the safest wildlife encounters in the ocean and one of the most awe-inspiring experiences you can have at sea.

Do I need to know how to scuba dive?

No. The activity is done entirely by snorkelling, not scuba diving. No certification is required. You just need to be able to swim and feel comfortable in open water. All snorkelling equipment is included in the activity.

What the day looks like — From departure to return

The whale shark excursion departs from Cancún or Puerto Morelos by speedboat. The journey to the sighting area takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half depending on where the animals are concentrated that day. During the journey your guide gives the full briefing: what you are going to see, how to enter the water, how to behave and what not to do.

Once the sharks are located, you enter the water in groups of a maximum of 8 people. Each turn lasts between 20 and 30 minutes. After rotating, there is free snorkelling time in the area before heading back to shore. The full excursion takes approximately 10 to 12 hours, including transfers from Playa del Carmen.

What to bring on the whale shark tour

• Lycra rash guard or full-coverage swimwear. Chemical sunscreen is not allowed — mineral biodegradable only. A rash guard eliminates the issue entirely.
• Snorkel mask and tube — provided by the operator, but your own equipment is more comfortable.
• Fins — provided by the operator.
• Camera without flash. The images you will capture are worth any investment. Underwater housing for a smartphone or action camera works perfectly.
• Sunglasses and sun protection for the boat. The hours on deck are when sunburn happens.
• Towel, a change of clothes and some cash. The full excursion takes approximately 10 to 12 hours, including transfers.
