Bull shark season: November to March

If one experience makes Playa del Carmen special for divers from all over the world, it is the encounter with bull sharks.

Between November and March, pregnant female bull sharks arrive in the waters off Playa del Carmen. The dive is usually done at around 23 meters deep and allows divers to observe one of the Caribbean’s most powerful species up close.

Diving with bull sharks changes the way many people see the ocean. They are strong animals, calm in their movement and perfectly adapted to their environment. Whale shark season: May to September

The whale shark, the largest fish in the world, visits the waters of the Riviera Maya between May and September to feed on the plankton that appears in the area during that season.

This experience is done by snorkeling, not scuba diving, with departures from Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cancun.

The encounters happen at the surface, making it accessible to people who can swim and feel comfortable in open water.

Cozumel: reefs and drift diving

About 45 minutes by ferry from Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is one of the best-known diving destinations in the Caribbean.

Its reefs, coral walls and currents make the island ideal for drift diving. In this type of dive, the diver lets the current carry them while the reef slowly moves below, full of life and color.

The Cozumel Reefs National Park protects a rich biodiversity: corals, sponges, turtles, rays, tropical fish and different reef species. For more experienced divers, the C-53 wreck is also a very interesting option.
