10 reasons to go scuba diving in Playa del Carmen at Christmas
Bull sharks, cenotes, Caribbean reefs and Cozumel: ten reasons to swap winter for a Christmas dive trip to Playa del Carmen.
Swapping cold weather, winter coats and endless holiday meals for a few days of Caribbean diving sounds pretty good. Add the fact that December falls right in the middle of bull shark season, and Playa del Carmen becomes an easy place to build a varied Christmas dive trip around reefs, cenotes, Cozumel and sharks.
You can dive in Playa del Carmen all year. Water temperatures generally stay around 25-28 °C (77-82 °F), so Christmas is less about chasing summer weather and more about keeping your dive season going while much of Europe is already deep into winter. The PADI guide to diving in Playa del Carmen also places the usual bull shark season between November and March.
1. December is right in the middle of bull shark season
If one thing makes a Christmas dive trip to Playa del Carmen stand out, this is it. December sits firmly inside the period when bull sharks are commonly seen off the coast.
As with any wildlife encounter, sightings can never be guaranteed. But if diving with bull sharks is on your list, Christmas is a sensible time to plan the trip.

2. You can keep diving in the Caribbean in the middle of winter
While much of Europe is dealing with short days and cold water, Playa del Carmen remains a year-round diving destination. December still allows you to plan several days in the water without turning the trip into a cold-water expedition.
Conditions are never identical from one day to the next. Wind, current and sea state matter, so the actual dive site should always be chosen around the conditions and the experience of the group.

3. The local reefs are only a short boat ride away
You do not need to spend half the day travelling to reach the water. Playa del Carmen has shallow reefs, deeper sites, walls and current-driven dives directly off the coast.
Many dives are drift dives: the group descends, moves with the Caribbean current and the boat picks everyone up at the end. It is a relaxed way to cover a good stretch of reef.
4. Christmas can also mean cenote diving
The Caribbean is only half the story. Within easy reach of Playa del Carmen you can dive cenotes with freshwater, light beams, haloclines, cavern zones and limestone formations that feel completely different from a reef dive.
Not every cenote suits every diver. We choose the site according to certification, recent experience and buoyancy control, then fit cenote days around the rest of the trip.

5. You can do a different style of dive almost every day
A week here does not have to feel like repeating the same reef seven times. You can alternate local reef diving, cenotes, bull sharks and a day in Cozumel without moving hotels.
One possible plan is Playa del Carmen reefs, then cenotes, a bull shark day, Cozumel and another cenote or a deeper Caribbean site. The variety is one of the strongest reasons to base a Christmas trip here.
6. Cozumel is close enough to add another full dive destination
From Playa del Carmen you can dedicate a day to Cozumel and add walls, reefs and drift diving to a trip that is already varied.
For divers staying several days over Christmas, the combination of Playa del Carmen, cenotes, Cozumel and bull sharks makes it easy to build a programme where the scenery keeps changing.

7. There are options for different experience levels
Not everyone in the group needs the same certification or number of dives. The area has easier reefs, deeper sites, currents, wrecks, cenotes and technical options.
Before planning the dives, we look at certification, approximate number of dives, date of the most recent dive and what you actually want to do. That lets us build a sensible plan instead of forcing every diver into the same itinerary.

8. It works as a holiday even when not everyone is a diver
Playa del Carmen is easy to enjoy outside the water too. After a morning of diving you still have restaurants, beaches and the town centre nearby, which also makes the destination practical when travelling with non-divers.
You can keep some afternoons free, or reserve full days for cenotes and Cozumel when you want a change of pace.
9. It is a good way to finish the year if diving is your thing
December is when many European divers put their gear away for a few months. In Playa del Carmen you can do the opposite and finish the year underwater.
You also do not need to choose between a Christmas holiday and a dive trip. Here the two fit together without a complicated itinerary.

10. December brings several of the area’s best experiences together
Playa del Carmen is diveable year-round, but Christmas combines several things particularly well: local reefs, accessible cenotes, Cozumel and bull shark season.
If you only have a few days and want them to feel very different from one another, December is a convenient time to build a complete dive trip from a single base.
How should you plan a Christmas dive trip?
Christmas and New Year are busy travel dates, so it makes sense to organise the diving in advance, especially if you want specific days for cenotes, Cozumel and bull sharks.
When you contact us, send your travel dates, certification, approximate number of dives, date of your most recent dive and the experiences you want to include. From there we can suggest a realistic programme for the time you have.
