Playa del Carmen vs other scuba diving destinations: pros and cons for your next trip
Playa del Carmen, South Africa, Mozambique, San Andrés and the Red Sea offer very different dive trips. We compare marine life, variety, difficulty and logistics.
Choosing a dive trip is not always about finding the place with the most sharks, the most famous reef or the most spectacular Instagram photo. A great destination also has to fit your experience level, the kind of diving you enjoy, the time of year, the logistics and what you want to do when you are out of the water.
That is why we have compared five destinations that can easily make a diver's wish list: Playa del Carmen, South Africa, Mozambique, San Andrés and the Red Sea. All five are worth travelling for, but they offer very different experiences.
If your priority is finding the most complete destination, Playa del Carmen starts with an advantage that is difficult to match. On the same trip you can combine Caribbean reefs, cenotes, caverns, caves for properly trained divers, Cozumel and, in season, bull shark diving. That does not mean it is the best destination in the world at absolutely everything. It means very few places concentrate this much variety without turning the holiday into a complex expedition.
Quick comparison: what does each destination offer?
| Destination | Best for | Main drawback | Ideal for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playa del Carmen | Cenotes, Caribbean reefs, Cozumel, bull sharks and variety | Not a destination built exclusively around megafauna | Divers who want very different experiences on one trip |
| South Africa | Sharks, action, Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks | More demanding sea conditions and operations | Experienced divers looking for adrenaline and big animals |
| Mozambique | Megafauna, mantas, sharks and an expedition feel | More complex logistics and longer transfers | Travellers who prioritise big animals and adventure |
| San Andrés | Caribbean water, reefs and a relaxed island atmosphere | Less variety in styles of diving | Divers looking for an easy-going Caribbean holiday |
| Red Sea | Reefs, visibility, wrecks and liveaboards | Many itineraries revolve almost entirely around diving | Divers who love coral, wrecks and intensive dive weeks |
1. Playa del Carmen: the most versatile destination in this comparison
The biggest advantage of Playa del Carmen is that the trip does not revolve around one single experience. You can spend one morning diving Caribbean reefs and enter a freshwater cenote the next day. Then you can cross to Cozumel, completely change the underwater scenery and, if you travel in the right months, add a bull shark dive.
That constant change of scenery is what sets it apart from many classic dive destinations. You do not have to choose between ocean diving, caverns or big animals before you travel: several experiences can be combined during the same stay.
To explore those options, see our guides to cenote diving from Playa del Carmen, diving in Cozumel and bull shark diving in Playa del Carmen.
Pros of Playa del Carmen
- One of the broadest mixes of diving in a single destination: Caribbean reefs, cenotes, Cozumel, caverns and seasonal bull sharks.
- The trip can be adapted to different levels and experience, from recreational diving to more advanced activities.
- Playa del Carmen works well as a single base, so there is no need to change accommodation every few days.
- There is plenty for non-divers, making it easier to combine diving with food, beaches and excursions.
- Cenotes offer an underwater experience that none of the other four destinations can reproduce.
Cons of Playa del Carmen
- It is not a destination designed exclusively around megafauna, unlike some areas of Mozambique or South Africa.
- Wildlife, including bull sharks, can never be guaranteed.
2. South Africa: sharks, open ocean and diving with character
If you are looking for action, South Africa is difficult to ignore. Areas such as Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks have an international reputation for shark diving and ocean conditions that can make every launch feel different.
It tends to appeal especially to divers who already have experience with currents, boat entries and open-ocean conditions. The reward can be huge, but it generally asks for more adaptability than a Caribbean dive holiday.
Pros of South Africa
- Sharks and other pelagic animals are a major part of the appeal.
- Exciting diving with a strong focus on large marine life.
- Easy to combine diving with terrestrial safaris and a wider nature trip.
Cons of South Africa
- Sea conditions can be more demanding.
- Not the simplest choice for a diver with limited experience.
- The experience depends heavily on area, season and the conditions on the day.
Compared with South Africa, Playa del Carmen gives up some of the expedition feel and certain shark opportunities, but gains a lot in variety and in the ability to build an itinerary for a group with different levels.
3. Mozambique: megafauna and an expedition feel
Mozambique has the kind of atmosphere many travellers look for when they want diving to feel like part of a bigger adventure. Depending on the area, a trip can be strongly focused on large animals, mantas, sharks and pelagic encounters.
It is also a destination where it makes sense to expect more logistics. Distances, transfers and major differences between regions mean that planning the route properly matters. That is not necessarily a disadvantage, but it changes the character of the holiday.
Pros of Mozambique
- A major draw for divers interested in megafauna.
- A stronger sense of adventure and a wilder dive-trip atmosphere.
- Very attractive for wide-angle photography and large animals.
Cons of Mozambique
- More complex logistics than Playa del Carmen.
- Some of the best experiences can involve substantial transfers.
- Not always the easiest option for groups with very different diving experience.
If your number-one goal is to pursue big-animal encounters, Mozambique may have the edge. If you want every day to feel different without spending a large part of the trip moving between areas, Playa del Carmen is considerably easier to organise.
4. San Andrés: Caribbean reefs and a relaxed holiday
San Andrés offers another way to experience the Caribbean. Warm water, reefs, walls and an island atmosphere make it an attractive option for travellers who want to combine a holiday with diving without turning the entire trip into an expedition.
It shares some of Playa del Carmen's strengths as a Caribbean destination: comfortable temperatures, recreational diving and the ability to travel with people who do not necessarily want four dives a day. The main difference is variety.
Pros of San Andrés
- Caribbean atmosphere and a trip that is easy to enjoy outside the water.
- Good reef diving and recreational options.
- A comfortable destination when diving is important but not the only purpose of the holiday.
Cons of San Andrés
- Less variety in styles of diving than Playa del Carmen.
- No equivalent to the cenotes of the Yucatán Peninsula.
- For divers who want to change underwater environment radically every day, the programme can feel more consistent.
If you want Caribbean water and a relaxed island holiday, San Andrés makes a lot of sense. If you also want cenotes, Cozumel, caverns and seasonal bull sharks in the same week, Playa del Carmen offers a much wider range.
5. The Red Sea: reefs, wrecks and intensive dive weeks
The Red Sea is one of those destinations that almost every diver eventually puts on the list. Reefs, visibility, wrecks and the possibility of joining a liveaboard explain why it remains a reference point for trips focused heavily on diving.
A good liveaboard route can offer several dives a day for a week and reach areas that would be difficult to access from shore. For divers who want to eat, sleep and dive for several days in a row, it is a fantastic format.
If this is the kind of trip you enjoy, you can also read our Red Sea diving story and route.
Pros of the Red Sea
- Attractive reefs and excellent underwater photography opportunities.
- Many wrecks and very different routes.
- Liveaboards allow you to concentrate a lot of diving into a short trip.
Cons of the Red Sea
- On a liveaboard, almost the entire trip revolves around diving.
- Not every traveller enjoys spending a full week on a boat.
- Routes can be varied, but they do not offer the same contrast between open water and flooded cave systems that you get in the Riviera Maya.
The choice here depends heavily on the type of holiday you want. For a week focused almost entirely on diving, the Red Sea is hard to argue with. For a trip where you want to alternate completely different dives and still have freedom on land, Playa del Carmen is more flexible.
So which destination should you choose?
There is no universal best destination for every diver. There are, however, destinations that fit particular priorities better.
| What you want | Destination that stands out | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I want as much variety as possible | Playa del Carmen | It is the only destination in this comparison where you can easily combine Caribbean reefs, cenotes, Cozumel, caverns and seasonal bull sharks. |
| I want sharks and action | South Africa | Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks have a strong focus on large marine life and open-ocean conditions. |
| I want megafauna | Mozambique | Big animals are one of the strongest reasons to plan the trip. |
| I want reefs and an intensive dive trip | Red Sea | Liveaboard routes and the quality of many reef systems make it a classic. |
| I want a relaxed Caribbean holiday | San Andrés | A comfortable option for combining recreational diving with island life. |
| I am travelling with non-divers | Playa del Carmen | It is easy to combine diving with restaurants, beaches and excursions for the rest of the group. |
| I want something genuinely different | Playa del Carmen | Cenotes change the experience completely and add a type of diving that none of the other destinations in this comparison can offer. |
What about underwater photography?
There is no single winner here either. The Red Sea can be excellent for coral, wrecks and wide-angle work; Mozambique and South Africa are hugely attractive when large animals appear; San Andrés offers very photogenic Caribbean scenery. Playa del Carmen brings something different: you can return from the same trip with reef images, sharks, cavern scenes, beams of light in cenotes and Cozumel walls.
For a photographer who values variety in a portfolio, that mix is especially interesting because the entire trip does not depend on one type of subject.
Which destination works best if you do not have much experience?
Playa del Carmen and San Andrés are generally easier to adapt to divers with different experience levels than certain itineraries in South Africa or Mozambique. The Red Sea also has options for many profiles, although some liveaboard routes and specific sites require prior experience.
In Playa del Carmen, the trip can also be built progressively. You do not need to start with the most demanding dive. Reefs, cenotes suited to the diver's level and other activities can be combined according to certification, number of dives and comfort in the water.
If you want to compare levels and options, see our recreational diving courses and, for divers with the appropriate training, our information on cave diving in Mexico.
If your trip revolves around sharks
South Africa and Mozambique are very strong destinations when sharks and other large pelagics are the absolute priority. Playa del Carmen, however, has a specific advantage: during bull shark season you can integrate that experience into a holiday that also includes cenotes and reef diving.
Read our guide to bull shark season in Playa del Carmen. As always with wild animals, their presence depends on nature and can never be guaranteed.
Logistics matter too
One difference that is easy to overlook when comparing destinations is everything that happens before and after each dive. South Africa and Mozambique can involve more road travel, more planning and changes of area. A Red Sea liveaboard concentrates almost the whole week on the boat. San Andrés works well as an island base, but offers fewer contrasting underwater environments.
Playa del Carmen lets you stay in one accommodation and build very different diving days around it. That simplicity has real value when the trip lasts a week or when not everyone in the group has the same interests.
What if you travel at Christmas?
December changes the comparison because Playa del Carmen enters one of its most interesting periods for divers: it falls within the usual bull shark season and still lets you combine ocean diving and cenotes while much of Europe is in the middle of winter.
If you are considering those dates, see our guide with 10 reasons to dive in Playa del Carmen at Christmas.
Our conclusion: Playa del Carmen wins on variety
South Africa can offer more intense shark-focused diving. Mozambique can outperform many destinations when megafauna is the priority. The Red Sea can be an outstanding choice for reefs, wrecks and liveaboards. San Andrés can be perfect if you want a relaxed Caribbean holiday.
But if you want a trip where one day you are over a Caribbean reef, the next you enter a cenote, then you cross to Cozumel and on another day you may be able to dive with bull sharks in season, Playa del Carmen is very difficult to match.
That is its greatest strength: you do not have to choose just one type of diving. You can build a very different trip around what you most want to experience.

Editorial note: sea conditions, visibility, currents and wildlife vary with season and day. The comparisons in this article describe the usual profile of each destination, not guarantees of specific encounters.
Choosing your next scuba diving destination
Is Playa del Carmen a good destination for a first international dive trip?
Yes. The programme can be adapted to the diver's level and there is plenty to do outside the water. Certification, experience and the date of the most recent dive should always be shared before booking.
Which destination is best for sharks?
It depends on the species, season and type of experience you want. South Africa and Mozambique stand out for pelagic life, while Playa del Carmen is known for its seasonal bull shark diving. Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed.
Playa del Carmen or the Red Sea?
The Red Sea is an excellent fit for a week focused on reefs, wrecks and intensive diving. Playa del Carmen offers more contrast if you want to combine cenotes, Caribbean reefs, Cozumel, activities on land and different styles of diving.
Playa del Carmen or San Andrés?
San Andrés is a strong choice for a relaxed Caribbean holiday with diving. Playa del Carmen offers a broader mix of underwater environments thanks to cenotes, Cozumel and seasonal bull shark diving.
Which is the most complete dive destination in this comparison?
If complete means being able to combine many different types of diving without organising several separate trips, Playa del Carmen offers the broadest mix of the five destinations compared here.
