3 Days of Diving in Playa del Carmen: Bull Sharks, Cenotes & Cozumel

Three days of diving in Playa del Carmen can be enough to experience bull sharks, cenotes and Cozumel during the winter season. The key is to choose dives that suit your experience and leave some flexibility in case sea conditions change.

This is a suggested itinerary, not a fixed three-day package. Before booking, we review your dates, certification, recent diving experience and preferences. If your main goal is diving with bull sharks, start with our bull shark diving options in Playa del Carmen to check the different experiences, prices and booking requirements.

A flexible three-day diving itinerary

DaySuggested diveWhat to confirm
Day 1Bull shark diving in Playa del CarmenType of dive, depth profile, recent experience and sea conditions.
Day 2Cenote divingA route suited to your certification, buoyancy control and comfort in overhead environments.
Day 3Cozumel reefsTransport, dive sites and expected conditions.

The order is only a suggestion. If bull sharks are your top priority, tell us when planning the trip so we can choose the most suitable day. If you have not dived for a while, starting with an easier reef dive and adjusting the rest of the itinerary may be a better option.

Day 1: Bull sharks off Playa del Carmen

The usual bull shark season runs from November to March. Because this part of the trip depends on the seasonal presence of the animals, it makes sense to check your dates before organising the other dives.

At Scuba Alux, there are two options: a bull shark observation dive combined with a reef dive, or a feeding dive focused on the sharks. These are different programmes with different prices. Check the current bull shark diving options, prices and booking details before choosing.

The decision is not only about the kind of encounter you prefer. Your experience and the planned dive profile also matter: some dives may reach approximately 20–24 metres. We confirm whether an outing is appropriate for your certification and recent diving experience before booking.

If you are still choosing travel dates, read our guide to bull shark season in Playa del Carmen. For guidance on diver behaviour during the encounter, see our responsible bull shark diving guide.

Day 2: Cenote dives matched to your experience

After diving in the sea, the cenotes offer a completely different setting: fresh water, limestone formations and shafts of daylight that vary from site to site. Not every cenote has the same depth, visibility of the exit or level of difficulty.

Some routes are in open water, while others enter cavern areas. An overhead environment requires specific procedures and careful planning. Certification alone does not make every route suitable: we also consider your buoyancy control, recent diving experience and how comfortable you feel in this environment.

Our cenote diving page explains how we organise outings from Playa del Carmen. If you want to compare different underwater landscapes, take a look at Dos Ojos, Chac Mool and Angelita. They are examples of very different dives, not interchangeable options for every certification level.

Day 3: A day on the reefs of Cozumel

Cozumel adds a different reef experience to the bull shark encounter off Playa del Carmen. Dive sites should be selected according to the currents, conditions on the day and the experience of the group.

Before fixing the third day, check our Cozumel diving trips to confirm the logistics from Playa del Carmen and the programme available during your stay. Avoid making tight travel connections until the expected return time has been confirmed.

What if the weather changes?

Strong winds, swell or navigation restrictions can affect boat dives. That is why a flexible itinerary works better than leaving the bull shark dive as the only possible activity on your final day.

Cenotes may be an alternative to consider, but they are not an automatic replacement for a cancelled sea dive. Access, conditions, availability and suitability for your level must also be checked. Before booking, ask how programme changes are handled and review the booking conditions.

How to plan your diving budget

There is no published package price for this three-day itinerary. A realistic quote depends on the bull shark option you choose, the cenote dives and the Cozumel outing. Start with our current diving rates, then confirm what is included, any extras and availability for your dates.

If you are bringing your own equipment, need to rent gear or plan to take underwater photographs, mention it when you contact us. It helps us put together a programme that works for you from the outset.

What we need to plan your trip

  • Your travel dates and the number of days available for diving.
  • Your certification, approximate number of logged dives and date of your latest dive.
  • Your top priority: bull sharks, cenotes or Cozumel.
  • Your preferred bull shark diving option and whether you are travelling with other divers.
  • Equipment requirements and any questions about individual dive routes.

We also need to know your transfers and return flight details so the itinerary includes an appropriate no-fly interval after diving. That interval must be planned according to the actual dive profiles and applicable guidance.

Plan your main diving experience first

Start with the bull sharks, then build the rest of your trip

If you already know your travel dates, contact us about the main dive first. We can then advise whether to add cenotes and Cozumel or adjust the order of the days.

Plan your three days of diving

Send us your dates, certification and recent diving experience. We will review how to combine bull shark diving with cenotes and Cozumel based on availability, conditions and your diving profile.

If bull shark diving is the main reason for your visit, plan that experience first. The rest of the itinerary can be organised around it with more flexibility.
